IVF stands for In-Vitro Fertilisation. "In-vitro" means "outside the body." In IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred back into the uterus to develop into a pregnancy.
Think of it like this. In natural conception, the egg and sperm must find each other inside the body. In IVF, we bring them together in a controlled environment where conditions are ideal for fertilisation. Once a healthy embryo forms, it is placed directly into the uterus.
IVF is recommended when natural conception or simpler treatments like IUI have not been successful. It is also used when the fertility challenge is too complex for less advanced treatment to overcome.

Blocked or Damaged Fallopian Tubes: The fallopian tubes carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. If both tubes are blocked or damaged, sperm cannot reach the egg naturally. IVF bypasses the tubes entirely, making it the only viable treatment option in this case.
Low Ovarian Reserve: Ovarian reserve refers to the number and quality of eggs remaining in the ovaries. Think of it as an egg supply. When that supply is low, natural conception becomes very difficult. IVF allows us to retrieve and use whatever eggs are available and combine them with the best sperm in the laboratory.
Endometriosis: Severe endometriosis can damage the ovaries, tubes, and uterus. When endometriosis is at Stage III or IV, IVF gives significantly better outcomes than IUI or other treatments.
Repeated IUI Failure: If you have completed three to four IUI cycles without success, IVF is the clinically recommended next step. It offers higher per-cycle success rates and is designed for more complex fertility situations.
Premature Ovarian Insufficiency: When the ovaries stop functioning normally before the age of 40, natural conception becomes extremely unlikely. IVF using donor eggs is often the most effective path to pregnancy in this situation.
Severe Male Factor Infertility: When the sperm count, motility, or morphology is severely affected, IUI is unlikely to work. IVF combined with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is the solution. In ICSI, a single healthy sperm is injected directly into the egg. Think of it as precision fertilisation. Even men with very few sperm can father a biological child through this method.
Azoospermia: Azoospermia means no sperm are present in the ejaculate. In many cases, sperm can be surgically retrieved from the testis through procedures like TESA or MESA and then used for IVF with ICSI.
IVF involves more steps than IUI, but our team guides you through every stage.
Step 1: Consultation and Full Fertility Assessment
Your first visit to Delhi IVF includes a complete assessment. Blood tests, hormone levels, an ultrasound, semen analysis, and a review of your medical history. This tells us exactly what protocol will give you the best chance.
Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation
You receive daily hormone injections for 10 to 14 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. In a natural cycle, only one egg develops. IVF encourages several eggs to develop at the same time. We monitor your response closely with regular ultrasound scans and blood tests.
Step 3: Trigger Injection
When your eggs reach the right size, usually 18 to 20 mm, a trigger injection is given. This prepares the eggs for final maturation. Egg retrieval is scheduled 34 to 36 hours later.
Step 4: Egg Retrieval
Eggs are collected under mild sedation using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You rest for a couple of hours and go home the same day. Most patients feel mild bloating or cramping, which settles quickly.
Step 5: Fertilisation in the Laboratory
Retrieved eggs are fertilised with prepared sperm in our embryology laboratory. Standard IVF places eggs and sperm together. If sperm quality is poor, ICSI is used to inject a single sperm directly into each egg. Fertilisation results are usually confirmed within 16 to 18 hours.
Step 6: Embryo Development and Selection
Fertilised eggs develop into embryos over three to five days. Our embryologists at Delhi IVF closely monitor the development. The best quality embryo is selected for transfer. Remaining good-quality embryos are frozen for future use.
Step 7: Embryo Transfer
The selected embryo is placed into the uterus using a thin catheter. It is a simple procedure, similar to a cervical smear. No anaesthesia is required. It takes about 10 minutes, and you can go home shortly after.
Step 8: Luteal Phase Support and Pregnancy Test
You take progesterone medication to support the uterine lining. Fourteen days after the transfer, a blood test confirms whether implantation has occurred. If positive, an ultrasound is arranged two weeks later to confirm a healthy pregnancy.
