What is miscarriage?

Miscarriage is the loss of fetus before 20th week of pregnancy. It is also called spontaneous abortion. 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage — most often before a woman misses a menstrual period or even knows she is pregnant. Butn15-25% of recognized pregnancies end in a miscarriage.

What are the symptoms of miscarriage?

What Causes Miscarriage?

Most miscarriages are due to has fatal genetic problems of the unborn baby. Usually, these problems are unrelated to the mother.

Other Causes for Miscarriage Include:

  • Infection
  • Diabetes or thyroid disease in the mother
  • Lack of Luteal support
  • Antibodies against fetus
  • Physical problems in the mother
  • Uterine abnormalities

Higher risk of miscarriage group:

  • Age over 35 years
  • Medical conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid problems
  • Three or more miscarriages before

Cervical Insufficiency

A miscarriage can also happens because of weakness of the cervix, called an incompetent cervix, which cannot hold the pregnancy. A miscarriage from an incompetent cervix occurs mostly in second trimester.
An incompetent cervix can usually be treated with a “circling” ligature around the cervix in the next pregnancy, usually around 12 weeks. The stitch holds the cervix closed until it is pulled out around the time of delivery.

How Is a Miscarriage Diagnosed and Treated?

A miscarriage is generally confirmed by a pelvic examination and an ultrasound. If the miscarriage is complete and the uterus is empty there no need to do anything else. If the uterus is not completely empty then a procedure called D&C is performed. In some cases if the condition of the patient is stable complete evacuation of tissue can be achieved with medication.

How Do I Know if I Had a Miscarriage?

The common symptoms of miscarriage are bleeding and discomfort. Heavy bleeding with pain, fever and chills may indicate infection. This will need intervention by a doctor.

Can I Get Pregnant Following a Miscarriage?

How Long Will I Have to Wait Before I Can Try Again?

Most doctors recommend a waiting period of one to three months before trying to conceive again. The doctor may recommend some luteal support for early pregnancy. Take your time to recover fully before trying again.

Can a Miscarriage Be Prevented?

Usually a miscarriage is not preventable as the fetus has genetic abnormalities. If a specific problem is identified with testing, then treatment options may be available for preventing miscarriage.
