What is Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)?
In case of premature ovarian failure, there is a loss of normal function of your ovaries before age 40. If the ovaries fail to produce normal follicles, estrogen, progesterone in a cyclic fashion, it results in infertility. It is also called as premature menopause (PMM), but the two conditions are not quite similar. Women with premature ovarian failure have irregular or occasional periods for years and might even become pregnant but women with premature menopause stop having periods and cannot become pregnant.
Signs and symptoms in both POF and PMM are similar due estrogen deficiency. They include:
- Irregular periods (amenorrhea),
- Difficulty in conceiving
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Vaginal dryness
- Irritability or difficulty concentrating
- Decreased sexual desire
Premature Ovarian Failure Treatment
POF can be a disheartening condition often affecting women as low as 18-19 years of age. It is very common these days and often runs in families. These women may also have the poor ovarian reserve. For these women, it is very important to consult their doctor at the earliest and start their treatment. Oocyte preservation/freezing is a very lucrative option for these women.
